The FVM architecture uses the host machine's memory as the temporary scratchpad for running code. This minimizes CPU contention since code execution is carried out exclusively by one application. An application can be executing in one of two modes: paused and normal. Paused is similar to suspension in a traditional operating system. It allows the application to run in the host's memory, but to be easily interrupted and then restarted from an unmodified state.
Normal mode is the default running mode of a VM, which preserves the original state of the application. If the application exits normally or is interrupted, the memory is written back to disk. This is a save operation that is much faster than persisting the state to disk. Therefore, the majority of the CPU time of a VM is spent in paused state, rather than in normal mode. This dramatically improves VM performance.
In FVM, the host machine keeps track of the total amount of memory used by all the applications running on it. This memory usage is reported periodically to the FVM layer, which also determines the physical memory limit for a VM. When a VM gets too close to its physical memory limit, the FVM layer will detect this, and immediately reclaim the memory by moving VM execution into paused state. As such, a VM can be suspended at any time to reclaim memory when needed.
The FVM Layer
The FVM layer employs a copy on write scheme. A copy on write scheme is used for three reasons: 1) if an application's process does not modify its own page in memory, then there will be no need to synchronize the state of that memory page back to disk; 2) the volatile memory used by the VM must be saved before the VM can be suspended; 3) if the host machine is restarted, the FVM layer will need to restore the previous state of the VM on resume, and this would require a save.
The FVM layer tracks the amount of physical memory occupied by all VMs. If the total amount of physical memory used by the VMs exceeds the total amount of physical memory available on the machine, then the FVM layer will start reclaiming memory from the VMs in order to create space for other VMs on the machine. This will cause the VMs to execute in paused state until more physical memory becomes available.
