The WLAN survey is in essence a java applet that receives MAC addresses from a socket and in response sends MAC addresses to a socket.
The key macrodescript:
The keymacrodescript runs as a daemon. The daemon scans a port range for open sockets. It then sends each MAC address to each of the open sockets with the option "SENDMAC" set. In turn, each of the sockets will respond with a MAC address and then close its socket.
Then the daemon prints out the results to the console.
How it works:
The daemon will scan the TCP port ranges 0 - 65000. The first time it is run, it will scan for open sockets. The daemon will continue to scan every 15 seconds for open sockets. It will send each MAC to each open socket and wait for a response. The daemon will repeat this process on the sockets it has received response from. The daemon will print results to the console.
The daemon uses the NetworkManager library in order to send the MAC to the open socket. The daemon will send a MAC in binary form, and the NetworkManager library will convert it to ASCII.

From what I can tell by a quick glance, you should be able to do the following.
Run netstumbler with -i -s -w -t 60.
You can read the manual online:
Capture the output of netstumbler.
Filter out anything that is either a known invalid MAC address or unknown (something other than `0`, `1` or `2`) and set a variable to store that information.
Read the remaining captured output.
Add the MAC address information to a file.
The idea here is that you will end up with something like:
